Overview
Mando: Learn Mandarin (package com.mando.mando) is a beginner-first Android app that teaches spoken Mandarin through short lessons, listening, speaking practice and review. It works without an account. Your lessons, progress and settings are stored on your device and are not sent to us.
Information Stored On Your Device
Mando saves the following only on your device, using Android app storage:
- Your onboarding choices (learning goal, current level, daily practice time) and an optional first name if you add one.
- Learning progress: completed lessons, phrases learned, review schedule, speaking-practice results, practice days and streak.
- App settings such as audio, slow playback, sound effects and your daily reminder time.
This information never leaves your device through Mando. Uninstalling the app, or using Settings › Account › Reset all progress, erases it.
Microphone And Speaking Practice
Mando asks for microphone access only when you tap the speak button in speaking practice or run the microphone test in Settings. The microphone is not used at any other time.
- To check your pronunciation, Mando uses the speech recognition service built into your Android device. Depending on your device and settings, that service may process your voice on Google servers. That processing is done by Google under the Google Privacy Policy, not by us.
- Mando receives only the recognised text and uses it to show which characters were clear. We do not record, store, upload or share your speech.
- The microphone test records a few seconds so you can hear yourself back. The recording stays in the app's temporary storage on your device, is never uploaded, and is replaced the next time you test.
Creator Videos
Some lessons offer an optional creator video. Videos are played with YouTube's official embedded player and video thumbnails are loaded from YouTube. When you open a video, YouTube (Google) may collect information such as your IP address and viewing activity under the Google Privacy Policy. Videos are always optional and every lesson works without them. Creators keep full credit and ownership of their videos.
Ask Mando Helper
The “Ask Mando” help in lessons answers from fixed content that is bundled inside the app. In this version no questions or phrases are sent to any server or AI service. If an online AI helper is added in the future, this policy will be updated first and the app will tell you what is sent.
Reminders And Permissions
- Microphone – speaking practice, as described above.
- Notifications – optional. If you turn on the daily reminder, Android schedules a local notification on your device. Nothing is sent to us.
- Internet – used only to play creator videos and for your device's speech recognition service.
- Run at startup – lets Android restore your daily reminder after you restart your phone.
Mando does not request access to your contacts, photos, files, camera, location, calendar or phone.
What Mando Does Not Do
- No account or sign-in is required, and none is offered in this version.
- No advertising and no advertising ID.
- No analytics, tracking or crash-reporting SDKs.
- No sale or sharing of personal data.
- No in-app purchases.
Children's Privacy
Mando is a general-audience learning app and is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone, including children. If you believe a child has provided personal information through Mando, contact us and we will review the request.

Your Choices
You can deny or withdraw microphone and notification permission at any time in your Android settings; lessons, listening practice and review keep working. To delete everything Mando stores, use Settings › Account › Reset all progress or uninstall the app.
Changes
If Mando adds accounts, online services, ads, analytics or other data collection, we will update this policy and the Google Play Data safety answers before that version is released.
